Protein Content of Different Cheeses: A Handy Chart for Weight Loss Surgery PatientsCheese is often one of the foods that gastric sleeve, gastric bypass, and lap band patients add back into their diet after starting on their post bariatric surgery diet . Cheeses like ricotta and cottage cheese can often be tolerated even in the pureed stage of the diet. As weight loss surgery patients graduate from stage to stage, cheese is often a food that can help patients meet their protein goals as it can fit in at foods at breakfast, lunch, dinner, and as snacks (if needed).

Each cheese is different, not only in its source and flavor, but also in its caloric, protein, carbohydrate, and fat levels. While some brands do vary in nutritional content, the wider difference is between types of cheese. Some cheeses have a higher protein content, some lower, and the same is true for calories even when comparing the same serving size. To help Dr. Shillingford’s gastric sleeve, gastric bypass, and lap band patients make informed decisions to promote their weight loss and help them achieve their recommended daily protein intake, we’ve created a chart to help visualize the difference in calories, as well as protein, carbohydrate, and fat content.
