Sleep Deprivation and Obesity

At Dr. Shillingford’s bariatric surgery practice, behavior modification is an important part of patient care. All through the state of Florida, from Fort Lauderdale Naples, to Tallahassee, to Miami, and Palm Beach, hundreds of patients are experiencing tremendous results following surgical weight loss procedures including the Sleeve Gastrectomy (Gastric Sleeve), Lap-Band, and Gastric Bypass. Much of their success is attributed to the commitment of the patients and our team of clinicians to making permanent change.

A growing body of research suggests that there’s a link between a the increasing incidence of diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease, all of which are related to obesity, and how much sleep individuals get. In general, studies have shown that children and adults who get too little sleep tends to weigh more than those who get enough sleep.

It is thought that loss of sleep may contribute to weight gain the number of ways. For one, sleep-deprived people may be too tired to exercise and may take in more calories than those who do, simply because they are awake longer and have more opportunities to eat. Additionally, a lack of sleep disrupts the balance of key hormones that control appetite; so sleep-deprived people may be hungrier than those who get enough rest each night. Following the guidelines below is a simple start to developing healthy sleeping habits.

Do:

  • Maintain a regular sleep & wake schedule
  • Exercise early in the day
  • Keep out disruptive noise and light
  • Establish a bedtime routine
  • Create a relaxing and comfortable sleep environment

Don’t:

  • Take daytime naps
  • Consume alcohol, caffeine or nicotine, especially 4-5 hours before bedtime
  • Go to bed hungry or full
  • Exercise within 3-4 hours of sleep
  • Use your sleeping area for work
