Before gastric sleeve, gastric bypass, and lap band surgery, bariatric surgeons often recommend patients limit their sugar intake as part of their presurgical preparations. Dr. Shillingford, MD recommends his patients begin reducing their sugar intake more than two weeks prior to their surgery date. This reduction in sugar can help with the transition to their preop diet, encourage presurgical weight loss, and help reduce the size of the liver.
Gastric sleeve, gastric bypass, and lap band patients are always asking for suggestions for their pureed and soft stages following their weight loss surgery. While many bariatric patients can handle protein rich foods pureed in a food processor or blender, some people prefer to eat foods that resemble a more normal consistency but still qualify as pureed/soft. Olive oil or "light" olive oil is different. "Light" olive oil is not light in calories, but lighter in flavor. Light olive oil and regular olive oil are usually a blend of extra virgin olive oils and refined olive oils. Refined olive oils are usually made using chemicals and/or heat to remove flaws in the olives. A lighter-colored oil with a more neutral flavor is achieved.
