Support Groups for Obesity Surgery

3

Support groups have become a mainframe of American Society, ranging from the twelve steps of Alcoholic Anonymous to Bereavement Groups for those who are mourning. It has become a common American approach to seek support in groups that are not anonymous but rather open, inviting forums to seek comfort, education and community.

Living with any illness can be overwhelming and obesity is an illness that is very challenging. Considering weight loss surgery is a step in the right direction for many patients who struggle with the debiliating comorbid conditions of obesity. Support groups have origins in psychiatry; there have been many theories and approaches to group therapy including the tavistock model, structural family therapy and the twelve step model. Support groups tend to be low cost to free, at convenient locations and times to encourage patients to attend.

Dr. Kahlil Shillingford is a Gastric Bypass, Lap Band and Gastric Sleeve Surgeon located in Florida. He has support groups available to pre and post operative patients in his practice to aid his patients with education and support. Groups are generally managed by nutrition and mental health counselours who are part of his multidisciplinary team to aid the patient with a positive outcome. We look forward for patients who are interested in the weight loss procedures to call Dr. Shillingford’s office at 561-483-0844 to aid them with the process and educate them with the resources Dr. Shillingford can provide as a patient under his care.
